Michael Phelps - Boy Wonder, Boy Blunder

Published by ignitethemind under Celebrities, News Edit This

From 8 gold medals to 8 minutes of idiocy, this recent photo of Michael Phelps toking up a bong at the University of South Carolina in November 2008 says it all.

The 23 year old mega-star vaulted himself to elite stardom this past year when he won a record 8 gold medals and became the most winningest gold medal winner thus far in Olympic history.

And he tainted all that which he earned in a matter of minutes, making parents have to make an awkward explanation to their children when they heard their child ask about their hero, “Why does Michael Phelps have his lips all funny on that glass, mommy?”

It is true, however, that we all make mistakes.  We’ve all done things that we’ve looked back on and said, “Yeah, that was really stupid.”  Some may be “worse” than others, but in our own minds it all feels the same because of the weight of regret that lingers.

And in all fairness as well, Phelps did issue a formal apology: “I engaged in behaviour which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment,” Phelps said. “I am 23 years old and, despite the successes I have had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner that people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.

And this is probably one of the better more sincere apologies that a celebrity has made in some time.  Phelps has at least acknowledged his failure or at least he’s had to because it became public.

There is a conundrum with being a celebrity.  On the one sense you receive fame which you may not necessarily have wished for. On the other hand, you do receive fame regardless, and you surely must know that going into the business (whichever business that might be: sports, television, movies, etc.).  Unfortunately Charles Barkley was wrong - he is a role model, just as is everyone else who is in the limelight.

As for the Michael Phelps issue, he screwed up big time, but only received a small slap on the wrist from USA Swimming (a 3 month suspension) .  The bigger picture though, is this incident is like putting your hands in the fresh cement of your own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame , and then coming back and messing with it before its dry.  You keep meddling enough and your going to screw it up.  And eventually, if you don’t leave it alone, that cement is going to dry and your mistakes will be cemented for all to see.

Its not fair to be overly harsh on celebrities in one sense because the media is always following them, and its surely tiresome to never be able to live one’s own life in their own privacy.  Likewise, celebrities are human and imperfect like all of us.  They will make mistakes; most of us are just lucky enough they don’t get published in the paper.

In the end however, as Phelps even eludes to himself, it takes a level of maturity to be able to handle the fame and pressures of stardom.  There is no denying the obvious privileges of such a place in society; celebrities never seem to hate that part of it.

This posting isn’t to necessarily harp on Michael Phelps alone however, but simply to make a statement of maturity that must be maintained for any person in a position of influence.  And while we may all have different amounts of influence, we all have influence within the many spheres of our lives; and may we remember that with influence comes responsibility.

Phoenix has Taken the Wrong Flight. . .

Published by ignitethemind under Celebrities, News Edit This

Ah, yes, apparently if you are a great actor, those skills translate into being a great rapper too!

It seems this is what Joaquin Phoenix believes . . .

The retired actor has won it all - from Academy Awards, to Grammies, to Golden Globes - Phoenix has been an extremely successful actor.

Now he is venturing into a place where he should have never gone, and his new look is far from “fresh.”  Its a little bit more like Grizzly Adams meets American Eagle.

But maybe its too early to assume, right? Maybe Joaquin, in all fairness, is that talented that he can also rap?

. . .Yeah, and maybe Webster could be the starting center for the Boston Celtics too (or insert team of your choice).

Turns out, Joaquin made his rapping debut at LAVO, a local hot spot in Las Vegas. . . Here’s the shortened version:

(But if you really want the full-experience, watch this longer version: video)

Prior to the performance, Joaquin claimed that “this is me saying this is who I am.”

. . .Hmm, do the phrases “spoke too soon” or “open foot, insert mouth” or “9-1-1, What is your emergency?” come to mind?

Well, kudos to you anyways J-Pho (or whatever you will call yourself) because apparently world-renowned rapper and producer Sean Combs (P Diddy, Puff Daddy, or whatever the new name is) is willing to put his reputation on the line to record Joaquin’s first album (Wow - not one, but two influential names destroyed at the same time!)

So go chase your dreams Joaquin. . .but just remember, you may not always want to “Be Like Mike.”

A Tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.

Published by ignitethemind under Celebrities, News Edit This

On this day, January 19th, we celebrate the life of a man: Martin Luther King, Jr .

He was a simple man, who tried to live simply. He followed a simple philosophy: equality for all humankind - no exceptions.  And to pursue that great and true philosophy he championed another, one that he admired of Mohandas “Mahatma” Gandhi: non-violent resistance is the best path toward changing things.

His controversial but empowering Montgomery Bus Boycott was just one of the first forming events that began to change things for King and ultimately the nation.

Of course, he is well-known for the March on Washington and his “I have a dream speech.” Greater yet, he is greater well-known for being a major front-runner in starting the wave that moved and changed the civil rights situation in America.

One can only wonder why someone would possibly consider killing a man who promoted non-violence?  Sometimes people are not ready for change, and they sometimes act very foolishly in their ignorance.  And with great sadness that ignorance was taken out upon Martin Luther King, Jr.

But if he were alive today, perhaps he would not ask us to grieve his death but more importantly to remember that which he worked so feverishly for. . .Yes, he may very well ask us to follow the words of the grant anthem “We Shall Overcome “:

1.
We shall overcome
We shall overcome
We shall overcome some day
CHORUS:
Oh, deep in my heart
I do believe
We shall overcome some day
2.
We’ll walk hand in hand
We’ll walk hand in hand
We’ll walk hand in hand some day
CHORUS

3.
We shall all be free
We shall all be free
We shall all be free some day
CHORUS

4.
We are not afraid
We are not afraid
We are not afraid some day
CHORUS

5.
We are not alone
We are not alone
We are not alone some day
CHORUS

6.
The whole wide world around
The whole wide world around
The whole wide world around some day
CHORUS

7.
We shall overcome
We shall overcome
We shall overcome some day
CHORUS

And in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. and all those who joined (and still join) him in this valiant and critical pursuit of equality, may we remember the important words King had to share with us. . .

Hilton, Kardashian and Drama, Oh My!

Published by ignitethemind under Celebrities, News Edit This

If you thought that monarchies have been slowly becoming a thing of the past. . .think again.  These two “princesses,” Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian, are in line to inherit some of the wealthiest businesses around.

Conrad Hilton, Paris’ great-grandfather, started the well-known Hilton chain of hotels , and today Richard Hilton’s (Paris’ father) net worth is a cool $300 million .

Meanwhile, the net worth of the Kardashian pot of gold is not accurately known, but anyone who knows anything about stardom, starlings, and Hollywood, knows that they are not exactly hurting for money.  Robert Kardashian, Kim’s deceased father, was O.J. Simpson’s lawyer during his pivotal trial, but later went into business quite successfully (obviously).  Now the family is involved in a variety of business, most well-known probably being their family-owned high-end clothing stores.

But as is now apparent, money doesn’t necessarily mean civilized.  Reality shows for these two (Paris’ “The Simple Life” and Kim’s “Keeping up the with Kardashian’s”) show just how out of touch these two are with the real word. Paris didn’t even know what Walmart was. . .(Psst, Paris, they are only ranked #1 on the Fortune 500 list!)

While this isn’t a bash fest because these two ladies may not be the brightest of the bunch, nor a knock of jealously for the oodles of money they posses, after all, we are all different and their family has earned their wealth respectably, but it is absolutely mind-boggling how people can be so wrapped up in an elite world that they have no idea their life is actually considered fantasy, even qualitatively shallow, by many.  In a very odd sense, Hilton and Kardashian suffer from poverty-of-reality in the sense that they have been enveloped so deeply in luxury they have no concept of the world that 99% of the rest of the human race lives in (and yes, their parents have played at least some part in that as well).  Their reality shows are ultimately far from reality. . .that being the ironic comedy of their TV shows.

In this sense though,  there is a (small) sense of pity for being so naive and misled by the mirage that is economical elitism.  While many of us would like to avoid financial struggle, at least it does offer the perspective of enjoying life’s simple pleasures - something Paris and Kim probably have probably not experienced in the way the common world citizen has.

But in the end, it still begs to be asked out of logical, business common sense:

So how about it Mrs. Jenner (Kim’s remarried mom) and Mr. Hilton. . .are you really sure this is what you want the future leaders of your companies to be?

If nothing else, kudos to Donald Trump and his “heiress”, Ivanka who is quickly becoming every bit as savvy as her father.

Stealing Paris: Starling has home broken into

Published by ignitethemind under Celebrities Edit This

Well, its finally happened.  America’s favorite absent-minded, or just absent of a mind, blonde had her home broken into Friday, December 19th 2008.

Paris may be pretty much clueless about the world and totally self-absorbed, but no one deserves to have their home broken into. Thankfully, Paris was not home (the call of the break in was made at 5 a.m. Naturally, who would be home at 5 a.m. in the morning?)

Turns out though that its not that hard to break into a Hollywood Hills mansion.  The burglar broke through the front door of the home and stole some TWO MILLION DOLLARS worth of items, much of which was jewelry.

The real kicker though? Paris and Co. have yet to be able to identify what exactly is missing.  What does that say? It says, she basically has so much stuff she can’t even keep track of what’s missing!

Like I said, no one deserves to be stolen from. But I’m sure Paris is already over it, after all, this only gives Paris an excuse for another shopping trip. . . in her new pink Bentley.

Pink? Only in a Parisian world.
