A Tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.

On this day, January 19th, we celebrate the life of a man: Martin Luther King, Jr .
He was a simple man, who tried to live simply. He followed a simple philosophy: equality for all humankind - no exceptions. And to pursue that great and true philosophy he championed another, one that he admired of Mohandas “Mahatma” Gandhi: non-violent resistance is the best path toward changing things.
His controversial but empowering Montgomery Bus Boycott was just one of the first forming events that began to change things for King and ultimately the nation.
Of course, he is well-known for the March on Washington and his “I have a dream speech.” Greater yet, he is greater well-known for being a major front-runner in starting the wave that moved and changed the civil rights situation in America.
One can only wonder why someone would possibly consider killing a man who promoted non-violence? Sometimes people are not ready for change, and they sometimes act very foolishly in their ignorance. And with great sadness that ignorance was taken out upon Martin Luther King, Jr.
But if he were alive today, perhaps he would not ask us to grieve his death but more importantly to remember that which he worked so feverishly for. . .Yes, he may very well ask us to follow the words of the grant anthem “We Shall Overcome “:
-
1. - We shall overcome
- We shall overcome
- We shall overcome some day
-
CHORUS: - Oh, deep in my heart
- I do believe
- We shall overcome some day
-
2. - We’ll walk hand in hand
- We’ll walk hand in hand
- We’ll walk hand in hand some day
- CHORUS
-
3. - We shall all be free
- We shall all be free
- We shall all be free some day
- CHORUS
-
4. - We are not afraid
- We are not afraid
- We are not afraid some day
- CHORUS
-
5. - We are not alone
- We are not alone
- We are not alone some day
- CHORUS
-
6. - The whole wide world around
- The whole wide world around
- The whole wide world around some day
- CHORUS
-
7. - We shall overcome
- We shall overcome
- We shall overcome some day
- CHORUS
And in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. and all those who joined (and still join) him in this valiant and critical pursuit of equality, may we remember the important words King had to share with us. . .
